Exit-Intent Pop-Ups: Helpful or Harmful?

An exit-intent pop-up appears when a visitor's cursor moves as if to leave the page, offering a final message such as a discount or a guide. Used thoughtfully they can recover departing visitors; used carelessly they annoy people.

The question is rarely whether pop-ups work at all, but whether this particular one adds value or simply interrupts. The answer depends on relevance and timing.

When They Help

If a visitor is genuinely about to leave, a relevant, well-timed offer costs nothing to try and can capture an email address or rescue a sale you would otherwise have lost entirely.

When They Harm

  • Appearing on mobile, where exit intent is unreliable.
  • Triggering repeatedly within the same visit.
  • Offering something irrelevant to the page.
  • Being hard to dismiss or covering the content.

Use Them Sparingly

A pop-up is a strong interruption, so it should be reserved for a genuinely valuable message and shown no more than necessary. Always test whether it lifts overall conversions rather than just collecting more emails.
