Multivariate Testing vs A/B Testing
A/B testing compares two whole versions of a page, while multivariate testing examines several elements at once to see how different combinations perform together. Both have their place, and choosing the right one matters.
Picking the wrong method wastes traffic and time, so it helps to understand the trade-offs before committing to an experiment.
When A/B Testing Fits
A/B testing suits bold, single changes — a new layout, a different value proposition, a redesigned form. It needs less traffic to reach a reliable result and the outcome is easy to explain to stakeholders.
When Multivariate Testing Fits
Multivariate testing suits high-traffic pages where you want to understand how several smaller elements interact — for example a headline, an image and a button colour together. It needs far more traffic to be trustworthy.
| Factor | A/B test | Multivariate test |
|---|---|---|
| Traffic needed | Lower | Much higher |
| What it answers | Which version wins | Which combination wins |
| Best for | Big changes | Fine-tuning |
| Complexity | Simple | Higher |
