Velocity and Forecasting Delivery
Velocity is a measure of how much work the team completes in a typical sprint. Once we have a few sprints behind us, it becomes one of the most reliable tools for forecasting when the remaining work is likely to be done.
It is important to understand what velocity is and is not. It is a planning aid for your project, not a productivity score or a target to push -- treating it as a target tends to undermine quality.
How Forecasting Works
Once velocity settles into a steady range, we can give you increasingly confident projections.
- We measure completed work each sprint.
- We compare the backlog against that pace.
- We project a likely range of completion dates.
- We refine the forecast as new sprints add data.
Using Velocity Responsibly
We use velocity to inform decisions, never to pressure the team into cutting corners.
- We forecast in ranges, not false precision.
- We expect velocity to vary and read the trend, not one sprint.
- We never trade quality to inflate a number.
