Prioritisation: MoSCoW and Value vs Effort

Prioritisation: MoSCoW and Value vs Effort

When there is more to do than time allows -- which is almost always -- prioritisation decides what gets built first. We use simple, shared frameworks so the decisions are transparent and made with you, not behind closed doors.

Two tools do most of the heavy lifting: MoSCoW, which sorts work by necessity, and value-versus-effort, which highlights the quick wins. Used together, they keep your budget focused on impact.

The MoSCoW Method

MoSCoW groups every requirement into four honest categories, which forces useful conversations about what truly matters for launch.

  • Must have: the product fails without it.
  • Should have: important but not vital for the first release.
  • Could have: desirable if time allows.
  • Won't have (this time): explicitly out of scope for now.

Value vs Effort

Plotting each item by the value it delivers against the effort it takes reveals where to spend first.

  1. High value, low effort: do these straight away.
  2. High value, high effort: plan and schedule carefully.
  3. Low value, high effort: question whether to do at all.
