Metered and Usage-Based Billing

Metered and Usage-Based Billing

Not every product fits a flat monthly fee. Usage-based billing charges customers for what they actually consume — API calls, storage, messages sent — which can feel fairer and scale with value.

This article explains how metered billing works and what it demands of your systems.

How It Works

Your system records usage as it happens and reports the totals to the billing provider. At the end of each cycle, the customer is charged for their measured consumption.

Common Models

  • Pure usage: pay only for what you use.
  • Tiered: the unit price changes at volume thresholds.
  • Base plus usage: a flat fee with an allowance, then overage charges.

What It Requires

Accurate, tamper-resistant usage tracking is essential, because customers will rightly question any charge they cannot verify. We build clear usage dashboards so the bill is never a surprise.
