Payment Gateways vs Merchant Accounts
Two phrases come up constantly when you start taking card payments: the gateway and the merchant account. They are often bundled together by modern providers, which makes the distinction confusing.
Understanding what each one does helps you read pricing, compare providers fairly, and know who to contact when something breaks.
What Each One Does
Think of the gateway as the messenger and the merchant account as the destination for the money.
Bundled vs Separate
Older setups required you to arrange a merchant account with your bank and then bolt a separate gateway on top. Modern aggregators such as Stripe combine both into a single sign-up, which is faster to launch but gives you less direct control over banking terms.
- Decide whether you want a one-stop provider or separate banking and gateway relationships.
- Compare the all-in effective rate, not just the headline percentage.
- Check how quickly each option can be live and approved.
| Component | Role | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Gateway | Securely transmits payment details for approval | Checkout form, API |
| Merchant account | Holds funds before payout to your bank | Acquiring bank account |
| Aggregator | Bundles both into one product | Stripe, PayPal |
