Image Sizing and Optimisation for Editors

Image Sizing and Optimisation for Editors

Large, unoptimised images are the most common cause of slow pages, and editors are usually the ones uploading them. A little care here keeps your site fast and your visitors happy.

This guide explains the right dimensions, file formats and compression so your images look sharp without weighing pages down.

Get the Dimensions Right

An image only needs to be as large as the space it fills on screen. Uploading huge files and letting the page shrink them wastes loading time.

  • Full-width banners: around 1920 pixels wide.
  • In-content images: around 800 to 1200 pixels wide.
  • Thumbnails and avatars: 300 to 500 pixels.
  • Resize before uploading rather than after.

Choose the Right Format

Format affects both quality and file size. Picking the right one keeps images crisp and light.

  1. Use JPG for photographs.
  2. Use PNG for graphics with text or transparency.
  3. Use SVG for logos and simple icons.
  4. Use WebP when your platform supports it for the best balance.
