HTTPS as a Ranking Signal

HTTPS as a Ranking Signal

HTTPS encrypts the connection between your visitor and your server, protecting any data they send. Google confirmed years ago that it is a ranking signal, and browsers now actively warn people away from sites that lack it.

For any modern site, HTTPS is no longer optional — it is the baseline expectation of both search engines and the customers who trust you with their details.

Why It Matters

The benefits go well beyond a small ranking nudge and touch trust, security and functionality alike.

  • Visitors see a padlock instead of a 'Not Secure' warning.
  • Forms, logins and payments are protected in transit.
  • It is required for many modern browser features and APIs.

Getting It Right

Installing a certificate is only half the job. Every page should redirect from HTTP to HTTPS, internal links and resources should all use HTTPS, and there should be no 'mixed content' loading insecurely. We check all of this when we migrate or build a site.

Keeping It Maintained

Certificates expire, and an expired certificate throws an alarming browser warning that drives visitors away instantly. We use automatic renewal wherever possible and monitor expiry dates, so your secure connection never lapses unnoticed.
