Accessibility on Mobile Apps

Accessibility on Mobile Apps

An accessible app can be used by everyone, including people who rely on screen readers, larger text, or who cannot use precise touch gestures. Accessibility is both the right thing to do and a way to reach a wider audience.

It is also increasingly expected by the app stores and, in many sectors, required by law.

Who Accessibility Is For

Accessibility is sometimes treated as a niche concern, but it touches a huge range of people: those with permanent disabilities, yes, but also anyone in bright sunlight, on a jolting train, or simply getting older. Building for these situations makes the app better for everyone, not just a minority, while also meeting the expectations of the stores and, in many sectors, the requirements of the law.

What We Build In

  • Labels so screen readers (VoiceOver and TalkBack) can describe every control.
  • Support for the user's chosen text size.
  • Sufficient colour contrast for readability.
  • Touch targets large enough to tap reliably.

The Business Case

Roughly one in five people has a disability of some kind. An inaccessible app simply shuts them out. Building inclusively widens your market and improves the experience for everyone, not just those who need it most.
