What Is SSL/TLS?

SSL/TLS is the technology that encrypts the connection between a visitor's browser and your website. It is what puts the padlock in the address bar and the "s" in https.

It matters because it stops anyone in between from reading or tampering with the information being exchanged — passwords, card details, personal data. It is also expected by browsers and by search engines.

An Everyday Analogy

SSL/TLS is like sending a letter in a sealed, tamper-proof envelope rather than on a postcard anyone could read. Only the intended recipient can open it.

  • It encrypts data in transit.
  • It verifies the site is really yours.
  • It enables the padlock and https.
  • It is renewed via a certificate you maintain.

Why It Matters to You

A secure connection is now a baseline expectation, not an optional extra.

  • Protects customer data and your reputation.
  • Avoids the "Not secure" warning that scares visitors away.
  • Required for taking payments safely.
  • Gives a small but real search-ranking benefit.

If you need a hand with any of this, your Progressive Robot delivery team is ready to help. Raise a ticket from the Support area of your client portal or speak to your account manager and we will guide you through the next steps.
