The Difference Between Features and Benefits

A feature is what your product has; a benefit is what the customer gets. Most weak copy lists features and assumes the reader will work out why they matter. Strong copy spells out the benefit and lets the feature back it up.

Getting this right is one of the fastest ways to make a page more persuasive without changing the product at all. It simply reframes the same facts in terms the reader actually cares about.

Turning Features Into Benefits

The trick is to follow each feature with the words which means and finish the sentence from the customer's point of view. Repeat until the outcome is genuinely human.

  1. Write the feature plainly.
  2. Add 'which means' and the practical result.
  3. Add 'so you can' and the outcome they care about.
  4. Keep the version that sounds most natural.

Do Not Throw Features Away

Benefits sell, but informed buyers still want the specifics. The usual answer is to lead with the benefit and support it with the feature, so both the emotional and the rational reader are satisfied. A comparison table or specification list can carry the detail while your prose carries the persuasion.
