Privacy Notices for Forms
Every form that collects personal data — a contact form, a newsletter sign-up, a job application — should tell people, at the point of collection, what you will do with their information.
This is general guidance on getting form-level privacy notices right.
What to Say at the Form
- Who is collecting the data.
- Why you need it and what you will do with it.
- How long you will keep it.
- A link to your full privacy policy.
Keep It Short and Layered
A brief notice next to the submit button, linking to fuller detail, works well. Avoid overwhelming people, but never leave them guessing about what happens to their data.
Separate Marketing Clearly
If a form also signs people up for marketing, use a separate, unticked opt-in with its own clear wording. Do not bundle it into the main submission.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a link to my privacy policy enough?
A short notice plus a link is best practice. A bare link alone may not meet the expectation that key information is upfront.
