Payment Failing at Checkout

Payment Failing at Checkout

When customers cannot complete a purchase, every failed checkout is lost revenue, so payment problems deserve quick attention. The cause may lie with the card, the payment provider, or a setting on your site.

Most checkout failures fall into clear categories, and a few checks usually reveal which. This guide helps you gather the right information so the issue can be resolved fast.

Common Causes

Payment failures generally come from one of these areas.

  • The customer's card being declined by their bank.
  • Payment gateway credentials expired or misconfigured.
  • The gateway in test mode rather than live.
  • A security check (3-D Secure) the customer did not complete.

What to Check

These checks help separate a one-off from a wider fault.

  1. Place a small test order yourself.
  2. Note any error message shown at checkout.
  3. Check your payment provider's dashboard for declined attempts.
  4. Confirm whether it affects all customers or just some.

When to Escalate Urgently

If no payments are going through at all, treat it as a priority and raise a ticket immediately. We can check the gateway configuration, confirm it is in live mode, and test the full checkout so you stop losing sales.
