Browser Shows 'Not Secure'

Seeing 'Not Secure' next to your web address is off-putting for visitors and suggests their connection is not protected. In most cases it means the page is loading over plain HTTP rather than secure HTTPS, or there is a problem with the security certificate.

This is usually straightforward to fix and does not mean your site is hacked. This guide explains what the warning means and how it is resolved.

What Triggers the Warning

Browsers show 'Not Secure' for a small number of reasons.

  • The site has no SSL certificate installed.
  • An expired or invalid certificate.
  • Pages loading over http:// instead of https://.
  • Mixed content, where some items load insecurely.

What to Check

A few quick checks point to the likely cause.

  1. Click the warning to read the certificate details.
  2. Note whether the address starts with https.
  3. Check whether every page is affected or just some.
  4. Confirm whether it started recently.

How We Fix It

We can install or renew the SSL certificate, force all traffic to HTTPS, and clear up any mixed content so the padlock shows for every visitor. Raise a ticket and we will restore the secure label quickly.
