Transferring a Domain Between Registrars

Transferring a Domain Between Registrars

You are not tied to the company you first registered your domain with. Transferring to a new registrar can save money, consolidate your domains in one place, or move you to a provider with better service. The process is well defined but has a few steps that must be followed carefully.

Done properly, a transfer causes no downtime for your website or email; rushed or mishandled, it can cause both.

Before You Start

A few conditions must be met before a transfer can go ahead, and checking them up front avoids frustration.

  • The domain must be at least 60 days old and not recently transferred.
  • It must be unlocked at the current registrar.
  • You need the authorisation or EPP code from the current registrar.
  • Your contact email on the domain must be reachable.

The Transfer Steps

Once the prerequisites are met, the process is straightforward.

  1. Unlock the domain and obtain the authorisation code.
  2. Start the transfer at the new registrar and enter the code.
  3. Approve the confirmation email that is sent to you.
  4. Wait for completion, usually within a few days.
