Skip Links and Landmarks

Skip Links and Landmarks

Most pages start with the same header, logo and navigation. A keyboard or screen-reader user would have to wade through all of it on every single page before reaching the content. Skip links and landmarks let them jump straight there.

These features are invisible to most visitors but transformative for those who need them — and they take very little effort to add.

What a Skip Link Does

A skip link is usually the first thing on the page. It is hidden until focused, then offers to jump past the navigation directly to the main content.

Landmarks for Orientation

Landmarks label the major regions of a page so users can move between them instantly, much like the signposts in a building. A screen-reader user can list every landmark and jump straight to the one they want.

  • Header and navigation areas.
  • The main content region.
  • Sidebars and complementary content.
  • The footer.

Almost Invisible, Always Appreciated

The beauty of skip links and landmarks is that they cost little to add and never get in the way of other visitors. For the people who depend on them, though, they turn a tedious slog through repeated navigation into a single, effortless jump to the content that matters.
