Setting Up Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 DNS
Moving your email to Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 means telling the world that these services now handle your domain's mail. That is done through a specific set of DNS records, and getting every one right is the difference between flawless email and frustrating gaps.
While both providers walk you through the process, the records themselves follow the same principles we explain here.
The Records You Will Add
A typical setup involves several record types, each with a distinct role.
- MX records direct incoming mail to the provider's servers.
- TXT records verify ownership and publish your SPF policy.
- CNAME records enable services such as auto-configuration and web mail.
- DKIM records let the provider sign your outgoing mail.
Order and Timing
We add the records, verify the domain, then switch the MX records last so that mail keeps flowing until the new service is fully ready. Lowering TTLs beforehand keeps the cut-over quick.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will I lose email during the switch?
No — with a planned cut-over, mail is delivered to the old system until the new MX records take effect, then to the new one.
