Power, Connectivity and Physical Risks
Not every disaster is digital. Power cuts, severed internet lines, floods and fires can all take systems offline regardless of how good your software is. A complete continuity plan accounts for these physical realities.
This article looks at the everyday physical risks and how we design around them.
The Main Physical Risks
These risks are mundane but cause a large share of real outages.
- Loss of mains power to an office or server room.
- A single broadband or leased line failing.
- Flood, fire or water damage to equipment.
- Theft of hardware holding data.
Designing Around Them
Hosting in professional data centres with backup power, multiple network routes and fire suppression removes most of these risks far more cheaply than replicating them in-house.
Frequently Asked Questions
Aren't cloud services already protected against this?
Reputable providers are, which is one reason we favour them — they invest in power, cooling and connectivity at a scale individual businesses cannot.
