Pointing a Domain at a New Website
When you build a new site or move to a new host, the final step is telling the world to send visitors to the new location. This is done by updating the domain's DNS records so they point at the new server.
Done carefully, the switch is seamless and your visitors never notice. Done carelessly, you risk downtime or broken email, so we follow a tried-and-tested sequence.
What Needs to Change
Usually only the records that control the website need updating, but it pays to review everything to avoid surprises.
- The A or AAAA record for the root domain.
- The CNAME or A record for the
wwwversion. - Any subdomains that should also move.
- A check that email MX records stay untouched if mail is not moving.
Our Safe Switch Process
We minimise risk by preparing the new site fully before the address ever changes.
- Build and test the new site on a temporary address.
- Lower DNS TTLs a day or two in advance.
- Update the records at a quiet time of day.
- Verify the site, forms and email immediately afterwards.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will my site go down during the switch?
With planning, no. Both old and new sites stay live during propagation, so visitors reach a working site throughout.
