Immutable Backups
An immutable backup is one that, once written, cannot be changed or deleted until a set period has passed — not even by an administrator. This makes it one of the strongest protections against ransomware and malicious insiders.
This article explains how immutability works and why it has become a key part of serious backup strategies.
Why Immutability Matters
Modern ransomware deliberately seeks out and deletes backups before encrypting the live data. Immutable backups simply cannot be erased, so a clean copy always survives.
- Protects against ransomware deleting your backups.
- Guards against accidental or malicious deletion.
- Provides a guaranteed clean recovery point.
How It Is Used
We set an immutability window — for example 30 days — during which backups are locked. After that they expire under the normal retention policy.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can we still delete old immutable backups eventually?
Yes, once the locked period expires they follow your usual retention rules and are removed automatically.
Does this replace off-site backups?
No — it complements them. Immutability protects against tampering; off-site protects against location loss.
