Heading Structure and Document Outline

Heading Structure and Document Outline

Headings do more than make text bigger. They create the outline of your page — the table of contents that screen-reader users rely on to understand and navigate content. A logical heading structure is one of the most powerful accessibility tools you have.

It also helps sighted readers skim, and gives search engines a clear picture of how your content is organised.

One Level at a Time

Headings run from H1 down to H6 and should nest logically, like chapters and sub-sections, without skipping levels.

  1. Use a single H1 for the main page title.
  2. Use H2 for major sections.
  3. Use H3 for sub-sections within an H2, and so on.
  4. Never choose a heading level just for its size — style it with CSS instead.

Why It Helps Everyone

A clean outline lets screen-reader users jump straight to the section they want, and lets everyone else scan the page at a glance. It is structure and clarity in one.
