Expired Domains and Grace Periods

Expired Domains and Grace Periods

Letting a domain expire does not mean it is gone the instant the renewal date passes. There is a defined sequence of grace and redemption periods designed to give owners a chance to recover, but each stage gets harder and more expensive.

Knowing this timeline helps you act quickly if a renewal is missed and understand the urgency when we flag an expiry.

The Expiry Timeline

Most domains pass through several stages after their renewal date.

  1. The domain expires and your website and email stop working.
  2. A grace period follows where you can still renew normally.
  3. A redemption period begins with a much higher recovery fee.
  4. Finally the domain is released for anyone to register.

The Real Risk

Once a domain is fully released, anyone can register it — including competitors or speculators who may demand a high price to sell it back. Prevention is far cheaper than recovery.

Avoiding the Problem

Auto-renewal, up-to-date billing details and expiry monitoring together make an accidental expiry almost impossible. We build these safeguards into every domain we manage.
