E-commerce Platform Selection: Shopify, Magento, and Beyond
Choosing the right e-commerce platform is one of the most consequential technology decisions for a retail business. The wrong platform choice creates constraints that take years to reverse; the right choice enables commercial and operational excellence. Platform selection requires aligning commercial requirements, technical capability, total cost of ownership, and growth trajectory.
Major Platforms
- Shopify: Cloud-hosted, ease of use, rapid setup, large app ecosystem, strong for DTC brands. Limited customisation for complex requirements. Shopify Plus for enterprise. Best for: growing DTC brands, straightforward product catalogues, teams without deep technical capability.
- Magento/Adobe Commerce: Flexible, feature-rich, open source (CE) or commercial (Adobe Commerce/cloud). High customisation capability. High implementation and maintenance cost. Best for: complex B2B, large catalogues, multi-site.
- WooCommerce: WordPress plugin. Highly flexible, low licence cost. Scales poorly without significant engineering. Best for: content-heavy brands with existing WordPress investment, smaller catalogues.
- BigCommerce: Cloud-hosted, strong out-of-the-box features, headless-ready. Good alternative to Shopify for mid-market.
- Composable/headless: Custom frontend on top of Shopify, Commercetools, or similar backend. Maximum flexibility, highest cost and complexity. Best for: brands with unique experience requirements and engineering resource.
