Domain Privacy and WHOIS

Domain Privacy and WHOIS

When you register a domain, your contact details are recorded in a public directory known as WHOIS. Domain privacy is a service that replaces those personal details with the registrar's, shielding you from spam, scams and unwanted contact.

Privacy rules have tightened in recent years, but it still pays to understand what is published about you and how to control it.

What WHOIS Reveals

Historically WHOIS exposed the registrant's name, address, phone number and email. Data-protection rules now limit this, but exposure varies by registrar and TLD.

When Privacy Helps

Domain privacy is worth considering in several common situations.

  • Reducing spam and cold-sales contact to your published address.
  • Protecting an individual's details on a personal domain.
  • Keeping a planned project or rebrand discreet before launch.

A Word of Caution

Privacy hides your details but you remain the legal owner. Make sure the underlying registration is still in your company's name so control is never in doubt.
