DNS Propagation Myths Explained

DNS Propagation Myths Explained

“It is just propagating” is one of the most misunderstood phrases in web hosting. People often imagine a change rippling out across the world like a wave, when the reality is simpler and more controllable than the myths suggest.

Clearing up these misconceptions helps set realistic expectations when we make DNS changes for you.

Common Myths

Several persistent beliefs about propagation are simply untrue.

  • Myth: changes always take 24 to 48 hours. In reality, the delay is governed by the record's TTL.
  • Myth: the change spreads outward geographically. In reality, each cache refreshes independently when it expires.
  • Myth: nothing can speed it up. In reality, lowering the TTL in advance does exactly that.

What Really Happens

Propagation is simply caches around the world expiring and fetching the new value. Because different caches expire at different moments, some people see the change before others — but nobody is waiting on a mysterious global process.

Setting Expectations

When we plan changes around TTL, most updates are visible within minutes. We explain the realistic timing for each change rather than quoting a blanket two-day figure.
