Dedicated vs Shared Sending IPs
When you send email through a provider, the messages leave from a server with an IP address. That address can either be shared with other senders or dedicated solely to you. The choice affects your deliverability and how much control you have over your reputation.
Neither option is universally better; the right answer depends mostly on how much mail you send.
The Trade-Off
A shared IP pools your reputation with others, which can help low-volume senders but means you are affected by your neighbours. A dedicated IP gives you full control but must be warmed up and kept active.
Which Suits You
Volume is the deciding factor in almost every case.
- Choose shared if you send modest, irregular volumes.
- Choose dedicated if you send large, consistent volumes and want full control.
- Remember a dedicated IP needs steady sending to keep its reputation warm.
| Factor | Shared IP | Dedicated IP |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Low or irregular volume | High, steady volume |
| Reputation | Shared with others | Entirely your own |
| Setup effort | Minimal | Needs warm-up |
