Accessible Forms and Error Messages
Forms are where customers do business with you — enquiries, sign-ups, checkouts. If a form is hard to complete, you lose the very people who were ready to act. Accessible forms make sure everyone can fill them in successfully.
The two biggest issues are unlabelled fields and unclear errors. Fixing both is straightforward and pays for itself in completed submissions.
Clear Labels for Every Field
Every input needs a visible, programmatically connected label so screen readers announce what to type. Placeholder text alone is not enough — it disappears as soon as someone starts typing.
Helpful Error Messages
When something goes wrong, the message must explain what happened and how to fix it, in plain language and close to the field in question.
- Identify which field has the problem.
- Say what is wrong in plain words.
- Suggest exactly how to correct it.
Grouping and Required Fields
Related fields, like address lines, should be grouped, and required fields should be marked in text rather than colour alone so no one misses them.
